About Dick Dick turning

I started turning in 1956, whilst still at school.  A career in engineering put things  on “hold” for several years but I  was eventually able to return to the craft and have now been turning seriously for 15 years.  In that time I have studied with a number of turners of international renown, craftsmen from America, Australia and Germany as well as many of the most highly regarded turners in the UK.

My work extends from items which are purely functional to those which are purely decorative and encompasses everything in between. Life is much richer if the items we use have form, colour and texture which please the senses. In addition to my individual pieces I also work with other craftsmen making such things as candlesticks, table legs and other components for items of furniture or buildings. I have done turning for restoration work in the Royal Crescent in Bath, and have had work included in the annual Celebration of Craftsmanship Exhibition in Cheltenham, alongside that of many of the country’s leading exponents of the art.

The majority of my work is done in English hardwood and I have planted the land around my workshop with trees which, when mature, will provide many wood turners with a life times working material.

In 1998 I was admitted to the Register of Professional Turners sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Turners.

My work and workshop have featured in the woodworking press on several occasions; 'Woodturning' (1997 & 1998), and 'Good Woodworking' (August 2002).

Woodturning is a skill that has been passed down through numerous generations. To play a part in the preservation of this skill I am pleased to provide tuition to anyone wishing to start turning or to add to their current expertise.
